Answer
What Does sc2tog Mean in Crochet? Single Crochet 2 Together
sc2tog means single crochet two together: a decrease that turns two stitches into one, so the round or row ends one stitch shorter. Insert the hook in the next stitch and pull up a loop, insert it in the stitch after and pull up another loop, then yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook.

How to start
- Insert into the next stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop: two loops on the hook.
- Insert into the following stitch. Yarn over and pull up a second loop: three loops on the hook.
- Finish it. Yarn over and pull through all three loops. Two stitches have become one.
- Count it as one stitch. Each sc2tog lowers the count by one, which is what the number at the end of the round expects.
Questions
Is sc2tog the same as dec?
Usually. In single crochet patterns dec means a single crochet decrease, and many amigurumi patterns mean the invisible decrease, worked through the front loops only. If a pattern defines it, follow its definition.
What is sc2tog in UK crochet terms?
dc2tog. UK patterns call the US single crochet a double crochet, so the decrease is double crochet two together.
How does sc2tog change the stitch count?
It uses two stitches and makes one. For example, (sc, sc2tog) x6 worked over 18 stitches uses all 18 and leaves 12.
