How to Find a Crochet Pattern From a Picture

Updated 2026-10-20 · Written by the Craftuary team. Craftuary is our own site; the others are listed because they're good, and every fact about them was checked on their own pages.

Search the picture with Google Lens or another reverse image search to find where the photo came from, since the designer's page usually links to the pattern; if that fails, search Ravelry for the item and filter by free. If no pattern exists, Craftuary's Designer writes an original crochet pattern from a description, and you can add a photo for inspiration.

How to start

  1. Reverse image search the photo. Crop it to the crocheted piece first; results are better.
  2. Follow it to the designer. The pattern is usually linked from the designer's own page or shop, not from the site that reposted it.
  3. Search by words. Describe it: 'crochet frog amigurumi free pattern', then filter by free.
  4. Check what you find. Free patterns are often not tech-edited, so check the counts before you start.
Checking any pattern? Paste it into the free pattern checker: it counts every round and flags a count that doesn't add up. It also works inside ChatGPT or Claude (how).

Questions

Can I make a pattern from a photo of someone else's design?

You can work out something similar for yourself, but don't copy or sell another designer's pattern. Craftuary's Designer writes original patterns and won't copy someone's design.

Why can't I find the pattern for a photo on Pinterest?

Many pins are reposted without a link, or the photo is of a paid pattern. A reverse image search often finds the original page.

Is there an app that makes a crochet pattern from a picture?

Some tools try, but a photo doesn't show the stitch counts. Craftuary's Designer uses your description, with a photo as inspiration, and re-counts every round; checks can still miss things, so look it over before you start.
