How to Test a Crochet Pattern Before You Publish or Make It

Updated 2026-10-20 · Written by the Craftuary team. Craftuary is our own site; the others are listed because they're good, and every fact about them was checked on their own pages.

Test a crochet pattern in two steps: first check the arithmetic, so every round's printed stitch count matches what the instructions make, then have someone crochet it exactly as written and note anything unclear. Craftuary's free pattern checker does the first step in seconds; pattern testers do the second.

How to start

  1. Check every count. Run the pattern through a checker or recount each round by hand: stitches used must match stitches made.
  2. Make it yourself, exactly as written. Don't fix things from memory while you test; mark every place you had to guess.
  3. Give it to testers. Two or three people with different skill levels find most unclear lines.
  4. Fix, then check again. Every change to a round changes the counts after it, so recheck the whole pattern before you publish.
Checking any pattern? Paste it into the free pattern checker: it counts every round and flags a count that doesn't add up. It also works inside ChatGPT or Claude (how).

Questions

How do I become a crochet pattern tester?

Join a designer's tester list or a testing group on a pattern community, and sign up with sites that test their patterns, such as Craftuary's tester list at craftuary.com/testers.

How many testers does a crochet pattern need?

Two or three is a common minimum, ideally with different skill levels and, for garments, different sizes.

Is a stitch-count check enough on its own?

No. It proves the numbers add up; only a person making it can say the instructions read clearly and the piece comes out right.
