FREE  Lesson 1 of 5

Long-tail cast on

Hold the tail over your thumb and the working yarn over your first finger, put the needle into the loop on your thumb, catch the working yarn and bring it back through the loop as a new stitch; then slip your thumb out and pull the tail to snug the stitch onto the needle. This is a simplified diagram, not real hands: two pegs stand in for the thumb and the finger, and the slip knot is the first stitch.
