Tips

The free pattern

US crochet terms. The number at the end of each round is how many stitches you should have.

Size: about 12 cm (4.7 in) tall in worsted yarn (approximate; it depends on your tension)

Yarn: Worsted weight (CYC 4). A (brown) about 10 yd (9 m), B (golden yellow) about 10 yd (9 m)

Hook: 3.5-4.0 mm (smaller than the yarn label, for a tight fabric with no stuffing showing)

Notions: a little yarn for the embroidered details, fiberfill stuffing, stitch marker, yarn needle

ABBREVIATIONS (US terms): MR magic ring, sc single crochet, inc 2 sc in one stitch, dec single crochet 2 together (invisible decrease recommended), st(s) stitch(es), sl st slip stitch, FO fasten off, Rnd(s) round(s)

Notes: Worked in continuous spiral rounds; move your stitch marker up each round. The number in brackets is the stitch count at the end of the round.

Handle (make 1, colour A), about 1.5 cm (0.6 in) across at its widest

  • Rnd 1 4 sc in MR 4
  • Rnd 2 inc in each st around 8
  • Rnds 3-16 sc in each st around 8

Stuff firmly, and keep stuffing as you close.

  • Rnd 17 dec in each st around 4

FO, weave the tail through the front loops of the last stitches and pull closed.

Straw (make 1, colour B), about 3.4 cm (1.3 in) across at its widest

  • Rnd 1 6 sc in MR 6
  • Rnd 2 sc in each st around 6
  • Rnd 3 inc in each st around 12
  • Rnd 4 (sc, inc) x 6 18
  • Rnds 5-8 sc in each st around 18

FO, leaving a long tail for sewing. Stuff lightly if you like.

Assembly

  1. Stuff the Handle firmly so it stays straight. Stuff the Straw lightly, leaving its wide open edge as the bottom of the broom.
  2. Sew the handle to the straw at Rnd 1. One end of the Handle pushed a little way into the narrow top of the Straw and sewn all the way round.
  3. Embroider the tied band on the straw at Rnd 6 with colour A. Just above the fringe: wrap colour A three times round this round, pull snug and knot at the back.
  4. Fringe: cut 36 strands of colour B, each about 9 cm (3.5 in) long. Fold one strand in half, insert the hook into a stitch of the last round of the Straw, pull the fold through, then pull both ends through the fold. Repeat in every stitch round the edge (twice in each stitch), then trim the fringe le
  5. Thread a length of colour A through the top of the Handle and tie into a hanging loop.
  6. Weave in all ends.
