What you need

How it's made, in short

  2. Stitch the vine. Starting at the centre, stitch the green vine, one cross over each square, 2 strands.
  3. Stitch the hearts. Stitch the six red hearts and the pink square in the middle of each.
  4. Finish. Trim to 1/2 in outside the design, back it with felt and add a ribbon.

Tips

The free pattern

One square on the chart is one cross stitch over one square of Aida.

Size: design 28 x 84 stitches = 2.0 x 6.0 in (5.1 x 15.2 cm) on 14-count Aida

Fabric: 14-count white Aida, cut 6.0 x 10.0 in (a 2 in margin all round)

Threads: DMC 6-strand embroidery floss, one skein each: 321 Red, 3716 Light pink, 699 Green

Notions: size 24 tapestry needle, scissors; optional: a 5-6 in hoop, felt for the back, a narrow ribbon

Strands: 2 strands for every cross stitch, over 1 square of Aida

Stitch counts: DMC 321 Red: 198 stitches, DMC 3716 Light pink: 6 stitches, DMC 699 Green: 210 stitches

Instructions

  1. Fold the Aida in half both ways and crease it lightly; the folds cross at the centre, which is marked with arrows on the chart.
  2. Start at the centre and stitch the green vine first, working up and then down, one cross over each square.
  3. Stitch the six red hearts, then the one light pink square in the middle of each heart.
  4. Make every cross with the top stitch in the same direction, so the bookmark looks even.
  5. To start a thread, leave a 1 in tail on the back and catch it under your first few stitches; to finish, run the needle under 4-5 stitches on the back and trim.

Finishing

  1. Trim the Aida to 1/2 in outside the stitched design.
  2. Back it with felt or a second piece of Aida, glued or sewn with small running stitches around the edge.
  3. Add a ribbon at the top as a tassel if you like.
