The free pattern

US crochet terms. The number at the end of each round is how many stitches you should have.

Size: about 5 cm (2.0 in) tall in worsted yarn (approximate; it depends on your tension)

Yarn: Worsted weight (CYC 4). A (orange) about 15 yd (14 m); B (black) small amount, C (cream) small amount

Hook: 3.5-4.0 mm (smaller than the yarn label, for a tight fabric with no stuffing showing)

Notions: a little yarn for the embroidered details, fiberfill stuffing, stitch marker, yarn needle

ABBREVIATIONS (US terms): MR magic ring, sc single crochet, inc 2 sc in one stitch, dec single crochet 2 together (invisible decrease recommended), st(s) stitch(es), sl st slip stitch, FO fasten off, Rnd(s) round(s)

Notes: Worked in continuous spiral rounds; move your stitch marker up each round. The number in brackets is the stitch count at the end of the round.

Bucket (make 1, colour A), about 5.6 cm (2.2 in) across at its widest

  • Rnd 1 6 sc in MR 6
  • Rnd 2 inc in each st around 12
  • Rnd 3 (sc, inc) x 6 18
  • Rnd 4 (sc 2, inc) x 6 24
  • Rnd 5 sc, inc, (sc 3, inc) x 5, sc 2 30
  • Rnds 6-11 sc in each st around 30

FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Assembly

  1. Work the Bucket firmly so it holds its cup shape; do not stuff it, it is meant to be open.
  2. Rim: join colour B in any stitch of the last round of the Bucket. Work 1 round of sc in the back loop only of each st (30), then 1 round of sc in each st (30). Sl st in the next st, FO and weave in. The Rim uses about 4 yd (4 m) of colour B.
  3. Handle: with colour C, ch 16. Sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across (15 sl st). FO, leaving a long tail at each end. It uses about 1 yd (1 m) of colour C.
  4. Sew one end of the Handle to the inside of the Rim, and the other end to the opposite side, so it arches up and over like a carry handle.
  5. Embroider the jack-o'-lantern face on the bucket around Rnds 7-9 with colour B. Two triangle eyes and a zigzag smile on the front of the side wall.
  6. The bucket is about 5 cm (2 in) tall, and the handle arches about 3 cm (1.2 in) above the rim. It is a decoration, not a real container; it will not hold weight.
  7. Weave in all ends.
