Come up through the cloth, hold the thread taut and wrap it twice around the needle, put the needle back down right beside where you came up (not in the same hole), then slide the wraps down and pull the thread through so a small round knot sits on the cloth. This is a simplified diagram of needle and thread on plain cloth, not real hands.
